  17. <p>     RAISA GORBACHEV'S apparent nervous breakdown did not
  18. surprise top Soviet analysts. The normally vigorous First Lady
  19. was showing signs of tension when she accompanied her husband
  20. to the London economic summit in July. Drawing aside Barbara
  21. Bush, Raisa confided her worries about Mikhail's political
  22. future, even hinting that she feared for his life. Soviet
  23. officials in Europe report that she became hysterical several
  24. times during her Crimean captivity, and speculate that she has
  25. suffered a stroke and a heart attack.
